With the release of their debut album, Thank You For The Pain, Florida's rockers-in-chief Basic Rock Outfit are doing what they do best: Making good old-fashioned Rock for the masses.
Lead singer, songwriter and all-round inspiration, Jeremy Thomas wanted to make a record which evoked the classic bands he grew up listening to, while adding fresh sounds all of his own. In a nutshell, he wanted to create something timeless. And that's exactly what he did.
"This CD is kind of inspired by the last 40 years of Rock music," says Jeremy. "There have been so many changes in rock in that time, but one thing remains the same and that is the emotion that the music evokes in people."
Emotion. A good word indeed for this record. It is quite simply dripping with the stuff. Jeremy's powerful, soulful vocals are equally at home on ballads such as the beautifully lovelorn Alabama, as they are on power rock anthems like Shell and Thorn In My Side. Ably assisted by Joe Sanders' meaty guitar hooks and rounded off by a rhythm section comprising Jason Gaines' imperious bass and Mike Chilton's flawless drumming.
The album has a retro feel which the guys think has been missing from too many recent rock records. To achieve this they brought in legendary producers Sylvia Massy-Shivy (Tool, Dishwalla, and Johnny Cash) and Jim Wood (Dishwalla) to produce and engineer the album, and used only vintage equipment to craft their unique sounds.
There is also an authenticity to the Basic Rock Outfit sound, born from necessity as much as anything else. "I had two and a half weeks to do the vocals and most of the guitars," says Jeremy. "We flew Joe Sanders in for two days to finish and then mixed. In all, five weeks of fun and it was done. I love the album - it is a perfect compilation of songs for the heart and soul."
But you don't have to take our word for it. Critics have compared Basic Rock Outfit to the Foo Fighters and early Matchbox 20, with Jeremy's vocal performance praised for its sensitive, soulful touch. On top of everything else, this is one hard-working band! With barely a night off over the next three months, the boys are in demand at venues across Florida and beyond.
Thank You For The Pain is released on Tightnotes Records in February. If you like to rock, let Basic Rock Outfit show you how!
