Following another sold-out show, Karen Green returns to SPACE for her fifth solo
show with a new body of work - How on Earth - inspired by and celebrating the
release of Green's book from Siglio Press, Bough Down.

Lauded by critics and fellow authors, Bough Down includes images from Green's
2011 series - Tiny Stampede - which were created in conjunction with the prose,
and which take on new meaning in this context.

The paintings in How on Earth are vivid and expressionistic plein air landscapes
in oil on canvas, and different at first glance than Green's previous work. A closer
look, however, reveals her love for integrating text. The text figures differently in
each image: in some, repeated and forming, or covering the image, and in others
partially hidden - carved in with a palette knife or pencil, or painted into the sky.
Taking each text fragment, Green looked for a fitting scene, and created each
image accordingly, repurposing and transforming the words by their new, natural
context. Isolated from the manuscript, and dropped into nature, the words take
on a more literal meaning, yet maintain the sense of depth and mystery, which
continue to make Green's work compelling to old and new fans alike.
