Tattoo master Paul Booth, the artist of choice for metal musicians seeking tats, has proven that he's almost as good with a pen as he is with a needle. In August, Booth inked a deal with the MTV2 Headbangers Ball Blog to write a weekly column about his numerous experiences on tour, and interactions over the years with various rockers. The column, "Thrashin' Ink" will post every Wednesday, and through Booth's musings on ink, art and metal, readers gain insight into the mannerisms, quirks and philosophy of one of the most interesting tattoo icons. "Thrashin' Ink" will also feature rare photos and artwork from Booth's vault.
In Booth's first column, he talks about his first experience tattooing a rock icon (Sepultura's Igor Cavalera), the first time he was brought onstage by Biohazard and how he learned to only tattoo in the daytime. The second installment of Thrashin' Ink addresses when Booth acquired his collection of embalmed human fetuses and how ex-Korn guitarist Hed, (who has since discovered God), was enthralled with the little creatures. Primus frontman Les Claypool, however, seemed entirely freaked out and kept a close watch on Booth for almost an entire evening.
In the most recent, and perhaps most personal, Booth posting, Paul writes about when he met Down frontman Phil Anselmo and how the two bonded over old-school black metal. He also describes working with Anselmo at his haunted house, "House of Shock," and how "There’s nothing more fun than scaring the shit out of people and trying to make them piss themselves."With wit, dark humor and a crisp narrative style, Booth brings us into his world a few moments at a time before unlocking the door and granting us a temporary reprieve until the next Paul Booth "Thrashin' Ink column pops up in the Blog.
Thrashin’ Ink is just the latest highlight on the Headbangers Ball Blog. In addition to posting world premieres of metal videos, news items, concert clips and exclusive guest blogs from various artists (recent additions include Otep, Madball and Through The Eyes of the Dead), the HBB Blog recently launched its exclusive podcast series. So far, the site has posted interviews with all four members of Heaven and Hell and Atreyu singer Alex Varkatzas.
So check in with www.headbangersblog.com every day to catch up on all the metal you might have missed.
