Cut From a Different Cloth: Lynn Downey on Levi Strauss
Sunday, January 25, 2009, 2–4 pm
Free with museum admission.
Author Lynn Downey, company historian for Levi Strauss & Co. speaks about the legacy of maverick entrepreneur Levi Strauss. Using vintage photographs, advertisements and artifacts from the company’s extensive archives, Ms. Downey will chronicle the firm’s riveting story from its inception through today. And as a special treat, she will bring with her what is archived as the oldest pair of Levis for the audience to view.
Ms. Downey will also be joined by Carole Frances Lung, an instructor with Cal State LA’s Fashion Design Program, who will share how the program’s out of the box pedagogy, prepares students for careers in fashion design and the apparel industry. Then 12 emerging fashion designers model their innovative designs. The students were each given a bolt of denim and tasked with creating new functions and designs for the 21st century.
A brief reception follows.
