"Let Them Know: The Story of Youth Brigade and BYO Records" is available

Garnering mega plaudits for its historical significance for the Los Angeles punk community as well as its 31-track CD featuring songs from its archives done by Leatherface, Matt Skiba, The Briefs, 7 Seconds, Subhumans, NOFX, Bouncing Souls, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, and Anti-Flag, the recently released box set LET THEM KNOW: THE STORY OF YOUTH BRIGADE AND BYO RECORDS has been causing quite a commotion.

Packaged as a box set in both a double red vinyl LP edition (retail: $50) and a CD/DVD edition (retail: $25), the box set also includes a beautifully reproduced, comprehensive coffee table book, detailing the punk scene that arose out of SoCal with personal accounts from seminal punk bands as Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Social Distortion, the Damned, and many more.

"If there's a snotty, multiply-pierced, tattooed young punk on your copy of Santa's list, they may well dig Let Them Know"-Jim DeRogatis,Chicago Sun-Times

With early shining reviews in Alternative Press ("This CD/DVD combo shows just how important Youth Brigade and the label they founded, BYO Records, actually are"), Revolver ("most crucial document of early hardcore"), to PunkNews ("“Anyone who views music as more than just background noise and ringtones should definitely check Let Them Know out as soon as possible.

It will make you long for the days when music actually meant something. Well done, BYO”), LET THEM KNOW has taken over two years of careful research and planning to bring to fruition, exposing the little-explored roots of this very important punk movement.

Formed in 1982 by Mark and Shawn Stern of the band Youth Brigade, BYO started out as an outgrowth of their legendary LA club Godzilla's and quickly evolved into not only a DIY record label but a tightly-knit community for many in the SoCal punk scene. BYO's debut release, Someone Got Their Head Kicked In, captured the energy coming out of the creative and dynamic minds in that world and included early songs from Bad Religion, Social Distortion, SNFU and Adolescents.

Like many things they’ve accomplished, the release of Let Them Know marks something that has seemingly come natural for them, but has never been done before. Youth Brigade have again managed to gather friends, partners, and peers from the last three decades to create this project as a community as only BYO and Youth Brigade can. Participants range from band members of some of the greatest punk bands on the planet to booking agents, label owners, fans, writers and others intimately familiar with what actually happened throughout the years. It’s through their voices that the documentary movie recalls the band and label’s over 25 years of trailblazing the southern California punk rock landscape.

Written submissions and rare never-before-seen photos were compiled to narrate the story within a book and finally, a return to the roots of what started their record label back in ’82, a classic punk rock compilation record showcasing the effect and inspiration that BYO has helped foster for all these years!
