John Anthony remakes classic Streisand tune

John Anthony needed a cover song that would complement the original compositions on his critically acclaimed debut album, WHAT A MAN CAN DO. PRISONER (Love Theme from The Eyes of Laura Mars) had the power, energy and emotion he was looking for. However, Anthony felt the arrangement needed more layers to tell the story of obsessive love. After viewing the cult classic for inspiration, Anthony and co-producer Frank Verderosa, added a bridge section and guitar solo that helped the melody cut a little deeper. The result is a powerful musical experience.
The challenge to match the key, power and intensity of a Streisand performance would push the limits of even the most talented singer. Though the first verse resides quietly in an octave lower than the original, Anthony's high tenor rises to the challenge in the second verse and beyond. Anthony's vocal bleeds with sincerity throughout the song's many changes. Guitarist Marcus Wolf's solo offers an emotional passage into the song's dark instrumental section.
The bridge, written by Anthony, sheds light on the desperation and loneliness felt by the character in the film.
Vocalist Stacey Williams adds her expertise with haunting background vocals that help define the song's mood.
The arrangement and production of this remake don't rely on what had worked before. Instead, Anthony takes chances and delivers dramatic transitions that make his version of PRISONER stand on its own.
