UCLA Departmet of Music announces programs

The UCLA Department of Music is offering a variety of events for the public's enjoyment this winter. Programs include faculty and student recitals and performances of high artistic accomplishment in various genres, as well as visiting artists of national and international renown. Programs are subject to change. For updated information and confirmation of events, the public may call 310-825-4761 or visit www.music.ucla.edu.

All concerts are at Schoenberg Hall on the UCLA campus, unless otherwise noted. Tickets may be purchased through the UCLA Central Ticket Office by calling 310-825-2101. Campus parking for Schoenberg Hall is available for $9 in Lot 2 (enter the campus at Hilgard and Westholme avenues); short-term parking is also available at various campus locations.

Opera UCLA and UCLA Philharmonia — Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" Neal Stulberg, conductor Peter Kazaras, director

Mozart, da Ponte and Beaumarchais come to the UCLA campus in this roisterous, fully staged new production of "Le nozze di Figaro," one of the world's best-loved operatic masterpieces. Will the wily Figaro outwit Count Almaviva while helping the countess reclaim her husband's affection? Performed in Italian.

This event features faculty artists Gloria Cheng (piano), Michael Dean (bass-baritone), Gary Gray (clarinet), Antonio Lysy (cello) and Jennifer Snow (piano), along with UCLA student artists, performing the following compositions by UCLA faculty members: Münir Beken's "Blue Monologue" for solo vibraphone; Roger Bourland's "Stories We Tell" for cello quartet; Mark Carlson's "Songs of Rumi" for bass-baritone, clarinet, violin, cello and piano; David Lefkowitz's "Amour et Biauté Parfaite" for cello and piano; and James Newton's "Looking Above, the Faith of Joseph" for solo piano.

UCLA Wind Ensemble

This event will feature performances of "Urban Requiem" by Michael Colgrass; "Angels in the Architecture" by Frank Ticheli; "Shindig" by Daniel Godfrey; and "Lincolnshire Posy" by Percy Grainger.

Wednesday, March 4 8 p.m.
chambermusic@ucla presents "It's a Woodwind World"
Tickets: $15, $7 seniors and students (with ID)

This event features faculty members Sheridon Stokes (flute), Jonathan Davis (oboe), Gary Gray (clarinet), John Steinmetz (bassoon), Brian O'Connor (horn) Doug Masek (saxophone) and Neal Stulberg (piano), plus woodwind students. They will perform Bernard Heiden's "Intrada" for woodwind quintet and saxophone; Bruce Broughton's Octet for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons and 2 horns (West Coast premiere); Bill Dobbins' "Meet Me at Dreamland" for saxophone trio; and Saint-Saëns' "Caprice on Danish and Russian Airs" for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano.

Maglione, a second-year graduate student in the UCLA Department of Music's D.M.A. program, will conduct this full-length concert as part of his degree program. The concert features Andrey Astaiza (French horn) and Randolph Lee (trumpet) and includes selections by Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland and many others.

The program features UCLA professor Donald Neuen's graduate choral conducting students Arian Khaefi, Anthony Maglione, Daniel Suk and Sarah van der Hal.

UCLA Philharmonia — Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Major

(This program will be repeated at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, as part of the Sundays Live series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Leo S. Bing Theater. Admission to that event is free.)
