MySpace Records has named Chicago’s own Cavashawn a Top Unsigned Artist only two months prior to the release of their second EP on Wednesday, June 17. The band hunkered down in Los Angeles for several months with renowned producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Jack’s Mannequin) and has emerged with an outstanding pop gem.
Since the release of their first EP, Cavashawn (2008), the band’s fan growth has been exponential, entirely due to their organized online efforts. They poster the town red. (You’ve likely driven by their faces recently). They spend up to 6 hours per day on MySpace collecting new members for their very active Cavashawn Caravan, their street team.
With thousands upon thousands of fans on Twitter, Facebook, and other popular social networks, they’ve amassed a large enough fanbase to sell out the Beat Kitchen a mere six months after their first ever Chicago show. And they’ve finally gotten the attention of a number of major labels, as well as MySpace Records’ inclusion of Cavashawn on their site features.
Singer/songwriter Scott Salmon, along with guitarist Chris Hellmann, bassist Benton Kubicki, and drummer Jesse Feister, initially gained notoriety in their ex-hometown of Oxford, OH, by opening for John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Edwin McCain. They’ve since shared the stage with Lucky Boys Confusion, Coventry, Better Than Ezra, Jon McLaughlin and One Republic. Likening their sound to a blend of '50s influenced Maroon 5 meets Weezer, they manage to balance pop sensibility with a sharp intuition for authenticity, a combination that stands out during their feverish, all-balls-out live show.
Cavashawn's hit tune “Out Of My Mind” has been licensed for popular website Animoto and most recently landed on the opening credits of The Oxygen Network’s “Bad Girls Club."
