Santa Monica Pier to celebrate Route 66

SANTA MONICA PIER OFFICIALLY NAMED WESTERN POINT FOR HISTORIC ROUTE 66

66 Vintage Cars and Motorbikes Will Drive Final Route of Iconic “Main Street of America”
Ceremony Will Unveil Famous “End of the Trail” Sign Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. PST

WHAT: On the 83rd anniversary of “America’s Main Street,” the Santa Monica Pier will be officially named the western terminus of historic Route 66.A procession of 66 vintage cars and motorbikes will drive the final western tip of the highway, beginning at Santa Monica Blvd. and Lincoln Blvd., and ending on the Santa Monica Pier.The motorcade will be greeted with a rally and an official ceremony featuring the unveiling of a replica of the long-lost “End of the Trail” sign. Live music will entertain a crowd comprised of civic officials, dignitaries, Route 66 enthusiasts, residents and tourists.

WHY:Since its inception 83 years ago, Route 66’s precise western terminus has been in question. By popular opinion, the Santa Monica Pier has been viewed as the end of the famous highway. Popularly considered the unofficial western end of Route 66, the Santa Monica Pier will be officially designated as such with the unveiling of the iconic sign.
