Jewlicious Festival in Long Beach Feb. 25-27

JConnect and Jewlicious Festival, in collaboration with Long Beach Hillel and SoCal Jewish Student Services, will present the seventh annual world-famous Jewlicious Music Arts and Culture Festival from February 25-27, 2011 at the Alpert Jewish Community Center in Long Beach, CA. The nation’s largest Jewish cultural event, the three-day Jewlicious festival will bring a hip, modern perspective to a revered culture through world-renowned musicians, artists, speakers, community organizers, change-makers, and other leaders. The eclectic and transformative celebration has been described as a special blend of Jewish summer camp, Coachella, Burning Man, and Sundance. In past years, the massively popular festival has attracted more than 1,000 Jewish students and young adults from more than 60 colleges and universities, 20 states, and six countries.

Special performers for the 2011 Jewlicious Festival include The Sklar Brothers (Cheap Seats on ESPN, VH1, Entourage, Grey’s Anatomy, Chelsea Lately), Fool’s Gold (a Los Angeles collective that weaves together Western pop with African rhythms and melodies), Acharit HaYamim (Israel’s #1 Jam Band), Soul Farm (fixture of New York Club Scene), and Kosha Dillz (featured performances on MTV and with Snoop Dogg and Matisyahu). Presenters will include Grammy-nominated, gold recording artist Matisyahu, David Fishof (creator of Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp now on VH1), William Daroff (Vice President for Public Policy and Director of the Washington Office of The Jewish Federations of North America - JFNA), Emmy Award winning Filmmaker Ezra Bookstein, and award winning blogger David Abitbol. The festival also will feature many other speakers and educators addressing critical issues including social justice, alternative energy and ending oil reliance, food equity and ethics, Israel, and Jewish spirituality and sexuality.

Festival attendees will also take delight in the numerous community and recreational activities that will be held throughout the weekend. Activities to be offered include Sabbath banquets, workshops, surfing prayer service, wine tasting, Jewish meditation, henna tattoos, dance and yoga, swimming and, of course, relaxing with friends. In addition, award-winning films from the nationwide Jewish Film Competition for amateur filmmakers will be screened.

The festival’s culmination on Sunday, February 27 is an acoustic showcase with performances by Moshav, Noah Lubin (leading Israeli indie artist), emerging female artist Leerone, Rav Shmuel and others.

“This festival has earned a special place in the landscape of modern Jewish culture in America,” noted Rabbi Yonah Bookstein, founder and director of the Jewlicious Festival. “It’s a vibrant stage for our youth and next generation of leaders to highlight the best of their heritage. The entire world can witness as we share our arts, music, community, and culture in a joyous celebration."

"It's year seven and our momentum continues unchecked. Our student and young adult leaders have developed a tremendous grass roots based event, while the Festival itself continues to attract some of the biggest and most interesting names in Jewish arts, culture and thought. The stage is prepped, the community is primed and we are all ready to celebrate," added David Abitbol, founder of Jewlicious.com.

Night of Unity - Gala Event
The gala kick-off for Jewlicious Festival 2011 will be the Night of Unity, a cabaret-style event at Los Angeles’ famous El Rey Theatre on Thursday, February 24, 2011. Night of Unity will feature live entertainment, world-class music, casino games, a silent auction, open bar with top-shelf drinks, and gourmet food. The event will honor Rhoda Weisman with the Jewish Unity Award. Weisman initiated and co-founded 15 national and global ventures for young adults, including the Professional Leaders Project, Hillel’s Birthright Israel programs, Steinhardt Jewish Campus Service Corp, Campus Leaders Initiative, and Tzedek Hillel.
