Descanso celebrates the birds and the bees and all things lover-ly the weekend before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 12-13, with classes and a special romantic tour of the Gardens.
Cuddle up and enjoy the most romantic reaches of Descanso with your main squeeze on the “Tram Tour of Love.” This 45-minute adventure includes two glasses of champagne or cider and follows a special romance-themed script. Tours depart the Center Circle at 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12-13. Cost is $35 per couple ($20 for Descanso members), which includes admission to the Gardens, the tour and champagne.
Classes on Saturday, Feb. 12, include:
Birding at Descanso, 8 to 10 a.m.: This beginner class led by Joe Kertes teaches the basics of effective birding, species identification, and appreciation of the many exciting and beautiful birds at Descanso Gardens. Bring binoculars and walking shoes. Cost: $20, $10 members.
Backyard Chickens and Bees, 10 a.m. to noon: Turn your backyard in a mini-farm. Local expert John Lyons will teach the basics of raising chickens and backyard beekeeping. Cost: $25, $15 members.
Companion Planting, 1 p.m.: Learn the basics of “companion planting’’ in which a variety of plants grow among the roses. Rose Garden Horticulturist Amanda Everett leads this class, which includes a discussion of the benefits of companion planting and how this horticulture practice creates a healthier, more attractive garden. Then take a guided stroll through the Rose Garden for a close-up look at companion plants in the landscape. Cost: $20, $10 members (members can bring a companion along for free).
