Assemblage & Politics at the Getty Nov. 16

GETTY PRESENTS
MODERN ART IN LOS ANGELES: ASSEMBLAGE AND POLITICS

Conversation with Ed Bereal, Mel Edwards, George Herms, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, and Betye Saar is part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945-1980

Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 7 p.m.

WHAT: Los Angeles artists Ed Bereal, Mel Edwards, George Herms, Nancy Reddin Kienholz, and Betye Saar all made assemblage works that reflect on the charged political climate of post-war America. They used found materials to produce complex objects that engaged with issues including the civil rights movement, the war in Vietnam, and censorship. This lively discussion will explore how the medium of assemblage sculpture emerged and continues to thrive as a tool of social critique. The conversation will be moderated by Lucy Bradnock, of the Getty Research Institute. This event is part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, a collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California coming together to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene.
