Billboard announces Canadian Hot 100 chart

What are the most popular songs in Canada? Billboard, the world’s most comprehensive source of music, digital data and events, today announced the launch of the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 chart to be featured in Billboard magazine and on billboard.com and billboard.biz. A north-of-the-border version of the industry standard Billboard Hot 100 chart, The Canadian Hot 100 will rank the top songs according to airplay and digital downloads. The Canadian Hot 100 top-10 rankings will appear weekly in Billboard magazine’s Hits of the World section.
Emulating Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 blends digital sales data from Nielsen SoundScan and airplay information from Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) to reflect the 100 most popular songs across all formats in Canada. The rankings will be compiled using data from the Canada Digital Songs and the Canada All-Format Airplay charts, which rank the top selling digital downloads and most listened-to tracks on the radio. The Canadian Hot 100 chart will also serve as a premier radio resource, featuring a comprehensive panel of more than 100 stations representing rock, country and adult contemporary and top 40 genres. The radio portion of the chart will be represented by the Canada All-Format Airplay chart.
“The new Billboard Canadian Hot 100 will serve as the definitive measure of Canada’s most popular songs, continuing our magazine’s longstanding tradition of using the most comprehensive resources available to provide the world’s most authoritative music charts,” says Geoff Mayfield, Director of Charts, Billboard.
The Canadian Hot 100 will be managed by Paul Tuch, Director of Canadian Operations for Nielsen BDS, in consultation with Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard’s Associate Director of Charts and manager of The Billboard Hot 100.
Since 1958, The Billboard Hot 100 has provided consumers with the most up-to date and high-tech rankings of the top 100 songs in the nation. Unparalleled in its comprehensive data compilation, The Billboard Hot 100 has become an institution that remains one of Billboard magazine’s most frequently cited resources. The Canadian Hot 100 chart will launch June 7, with all 100 rankings available on billboard.com and billboard.biz.
