Topic: Advanced Chord Voicings and Right Hand Technique for guitar.Songsalive! holds workshops where songwriters gather to share their songs, gain feedback and develop relationships within the songwriting communities we have created around the world. The first half is solely dedicated to an in-the-round workshop where writers present one song each - either on tape, CD or live - followed by a guest speaker/industry discussion in the second half and plenty of time to talk and network. Moderated by Paul Lawrence Moyer.

SECOND HALF GUEST SPEAKER: LUIS OLIART
Southern California native Luis Oliart's talent as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter has been described as "simply magical totally captivating compelling." His sound blends the influences of funk, rock, blues, reggae and Latin, producing music that is fresh and full of energy. Luis Oliart expresses his love and belief in the healing power of music by performing for chronic and terminally ill children through Art of Elysium, a non-profit organization that encourages working actors, artists and musicians to dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. Oliart also runs a thriving private teaching practice for students ranging from three to sixty years old and works with the LA Unified School District to teach schoolteachers music theory skills to use in their classrooms. TOPIC: Advanced Chord Voicings and Right Hand Technique for guitar. We will start by working general to specific with chords and right hand technique. The major scale and chord triads built from each degree of the scale will start. I will go over major, minor, augmented, and diminished chords and coloring common chords with blue tones from the scale. We will go over voicings that utilize all six strings with little left hand fretting. The right hand technique section will cover flat picking, finger picking, strumming, percussive strumming, and the flamenco style. Note: This workshop is great for ALL songwriters whether you play guitar or not, as it offers insight into the importance and variations of guitar in songwriting.
