Brazilian Android, the new single by Aum Soham, blends in a very Brazilian way, rock guitars, jazz pianos, bossa and samba percussions, with astonishing outcomes and able to make anyone stand up and shake his hips. This single is a preview from the full album, due to be released soon.
The Cannibal Manifesto (O Manifesto Antropófago), written by Oswald de Andrade (1890 - 1954) and published in May 1928, became the theoretical core of Brazilian Modernism nascent movement, aimed to rethink the issue of European culture dependency in Brazil.
In metaphorical language, with sentences of impact, full of poetic aphorisms and humor, the Manifesto reworks the Eurocentric and negative concept of cannibalism as a metaphor for a critical process of formation of Brazilian culture. To the civilized European, American man was wild, or less, because he practiced cannibalism. The positive and innovative Andrade's vision, exactly like our cannibalistic nature allows, in the cultural sphere, the critical assimilation of ideas and European models, being able to swallow the imported forms to produce something genuinely national, without falling into the old relationship "model / copy", which dominated a portion of art from the colonial period and the Brazilian academic art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Nowadays this concept is clearly accepted, maybe because people in Brazil really have great ability to interact with other cultures and talent to assimilating foreign knowledge and blend them with their own, not to generate something hybrid or a collage, but an entirely new product with its own unpublished features.
And of course, the Brazilian music receives many influences from other countries, specially the United States and England, but this power to pick up the best in each one and mix with their own experience to create a new, unique and fresh art object, makes the Brazilian musicians maintain creativity and reinvention moving continuously, growing up day by day.
Brazilian Android, the single, is a pure example of this kind of multi-cultural assimilation mix. Brings to us an example of how this Brazilian music blend can be tasty and tasteful. The song has no lyrics but the theme can be perceived in a first hearing. It plays with the idea of an android produced in Brazil with imported technology certainly, but the swing, spirit and soul being very Brazilian.
