The Birthday Massacre on tour in support of upcoming album

Following their critically-acclaimed album Walking with Strangers, THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE is gearing up for the release of their fourth studio album Pins And Needles on September 14, 2010 via Metropolis Records. Combining their interests in various musical and artistic styles, the Toronto-based synth rock band create a captivating hybrid of 80's electronica and aggressive guitars, curiously fused with cinematically dark melodic progressions. Currently on The Spectacular Massacre Tour alongside Otep, Beneath the Sky, The Agonist and River Runs Red, the band are also gearing up for their own tour this Fall.

On the new album Pins And Needles, The Birthday Massacre further refine the unique sound explored on the band's highly acclaimed previous albums: Walking With Strangers, Violet, and the classic debut Nothing and Nowhere. From the opening notes of the lead off track “In The Dark,” it's apparent that the band has created a work of which they are proud.

"I LOVE this song. I love it, I love it, I love it," says vocalist Chibi of the song. "The chorus gets inside my head and plays over and over. I love some of the bitterness of the lyrics here, but to such a pretty melody. To me this song is about how fragile we all are, and how callous some people can be, about how even if you’re with someone and technically you aren’t alone – that can still be one of the loneliest places."

Revisiting the infamous, unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, better known as "The Black Dahlia", the propulsive bright pop of "Shallow Grave" belies its tragic story.

"Lyrically this song references the concept of fame being found in death – that sort of romantic tragedy," Chibi continues. "But it’s a caricature, like Elizabeth Short, who wanted to be a famous actress, but only after she was horribly murdered did she achieve any fame. She was only famous because she was a tragedy, and who wants that?"

The herky jerky dance rock of "Control" is a song that Chibi is excited to play live.

"I love the guitars here and the vocal melody," she says. "I think live this song will be fun to play; it’s got a great tempo and energy. I will admit to having danced in my kitchen to this one."

Mixed by David Ogilvie (producer of Skinny Puppy, Marilyn Manson, Killing Joke), Pins and Needles promises to be a harder and darker experience than all previous albums, contrasted by Chibi's shining melodic vocals. The Birthday Massacre once again lead us down the rabbit hole and invite us to explore the magical wonderland it has created. Pins and Needles will be released on September 14, 2010 on Metropolis Records.
