Thursday, August 26, 2010, San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino welcomes funksters Morris Day, The Bar-Kays, Lakeside, Slave and Klymaxx to the San Manuel Stage. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and the San Manuel Box Office for $35 and $45.
Morris Day
Morris Day was born with a flair for fashion, which appealed to his friend and fellow musician Prince, who helped to begin Day’s career in music. Day began singing in Prince’s band, Grand Central, and moved on to sing lead vocalist in Prince’s street-wise funk band, The Time. The group moved on to produce “Get It Up,” “Cool,” and “Girl” under the self-titled album, The Time, and would later release three more albums including “What Time Is It?” and “Ice Cream Castle”.
Soon after, Day ventured to a solo career, where he released three albums, “The Color of Success”, “Daydreaming”, and “Guaranteed”. The combined sales of his solo work and The Time exceed over 10 million albums.
The Bar-Kays
Originally formed in 1966, the Bar-Kays have been popular for producing soul, R&B, and funk music ever since. However, a plan crash nearly destroyed the band’s hopes, which claimed Otis Redding. In 1967, The Bar-Kays recorded their hit single “Soul Finger” with the World Renowned Stax Recording Company. The last descendants of the Bar-Kays legacy, Larry Dodson and James Alexander continue to do their mentors proud.
Lakeside
Formed by Stephen Shockley in 1969, Lakeside originally began as Young Underground, which fused with vocalist Mark Woods and his band the Nomads. The group relocated to Chicago renaming them Lakeside Express, after the Lakeside Express Newspaper. In 1974, Lakeside met funk group Liquid Funk, which featured Fred Alexander, Jr on drums who would eventually leave his group to join Lakeside.
After the addition of Alexander, the group found success with Dick Griffey’s Solar Records which would release their first Top Ten hit, “It’s All the Way Live,” which peaked at number four on the Billboard R&B charts. It was in 1980 the group released the smash number one single, “Fantastic Voyage,” which remains an R&B party song to this day.
Slave
Originators of the “Mid-West Funk” sound, Slave, with its founder, guitarist/vocalist Mark Hicks, went on to sell millions of records including hits like “Just A Touch Of Love,” “Watching You,” “Wait For Me,” and “Snap Shot.” Slave is a RIAA certified gold album group, and have been nominated for a Grammy for best Male Group and best New Group. More recently, R&B artist Keith Sweat, released his version of “Just A Touch Of Love,” which went on to top Billboard Magazines Top 100.
Klymaxx
In 1979, Bernadette “The Grand Diva” Cooper formed Klymaxx on the idea of producing a sound and style like never before. The band was formed with all females that could rock just as hard, still be sexy, and hold their own in a male dominated business. In 1980, Solar Records signed the group, where in their third album “Meeting in the Ladies Room” produced the namesake hit single. The album was Gold Certified RIAA along with their single “I Miss You.” The group soon split up, only to reunite after VH-1 asked the group to perform on their reality-based show, “Bands Reunited.”
