The sound and style are unmistakable. For more than 30 years, legendary axe master and innovator EDDIE VAN HALEN has been entertaining millions. Like some sort of fret frenzied pied piper, he continues to inspire countless others and the readers of Guitar World magazine are taking note.
As he wows audiences on the highly acclaimed VAN HALEN tour, EDDIE VAN HALEN scores four nominations in the Guitar World 2008 Readers Poll.
"Like Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, it would be almost impossible to imagine what modern rock would sound like without him," says Guitar World Editor-in-Chief Brad Tolinski. "Techniques that he invented or popularized are now part of pop culture."
So it comes as no surprise to find EDDIE VAN HALEN'S name in the Best Shredder, MVP of 2007 and Comeback of the Year categories. Both of his 2007 Guitar World cover appearances, which Tolinski says were two of the best-selling issues of the past year, are up for the Best Guitar World Cover.
"Almost every young, hot band that Guitar World has covered in the last year or two cites Eddie as important," Tolinski adds. "Lamb of God's Willie Adler, Zakk Wylde, Children of Bodom's Alexi Laiho and many others all bow to the king."
But it's not just his playing that causes EDDIE VAN HALEN'S name to rise to the top. His technical guitar innovations are part of the collective consciousness helping ignite legions of practice rooms.
"Ed introduced the locking nut system, popularized the idea of the custom guitar, and designed several amps and guitars used by millions of guitarists the world over," explains Tolinski. "Eddie taught guitarists that it is okay to invent, re-invent and innovate. He has liberated three generations of players, and encouraged them to do their own thing."
EDDIE VAN HALEN'S significance has never been more evident than today. Earlier this year, Eddie's trademark Frankenstein guitar was painstakingly reproduced by Fender and offered to the public. In March, VAN HALEN secured its spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By fall, the latest version of VAN HALEN hit the road featuring Eddie on guitar, David Lee Roth on vocals, Alex Van Halen on drums and Eddie's 16-year-old son Wolfgang on bass. An explosion of critical praise and a People's Choice Award nomination soon followed.
Players and fans alike have the opportunity to give thanks for EDDIE VAN HALEN'S contributions by taking part in the Guitar World 2008 Readers Poll online at http://app.bronto.com/public/?q=link&fn=Key&id=adecpvgajtzebragdvjxwfvgddbubma&link=bewynorhkiwyqthceaikwiuvnagnbac. All votes received by December 31, 2007 will be tallied, and the winners will appear in an upcoming issue of Guitar World.
