Oslo has carved their own unique niche in the rock scene and I like it. I've seen them live a few times and they do their studio work justice and more. For a little something different, you might want to make time for one of their shows. ~M

OSLO comprised of MATTIA BORRANI (lead vocals, guitars), KERRY WAYNE JAMES (bass), GABRIAL McNAIR (guitars, backing vocals), DAMON RAMIREZ (keys) and CHARLIE WALKER (drums) has enjoyed much success independent of any label support. Their emotive and engaging live shows and self-titled, self-produced debut release (2005) garnered significant buzz and coverage from RollingStone, Billboard, Music Edge, LA Weekly and the Los Angeles Times, which named Oslo one of the top 10 bands to download in the Fall of 2006.
Oslo's forthcoming sophomore release The Rise and Fall of Love and Hate, which they co-produced with Grammy Nominated engineer/mixer Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mickey P (Beck, Peaches, The Eels) and Sam Fogarino (Drummer, Interpol) is already receiving warm reception from radio, including Indie 103's Check One Two... and new song "Rhyme or Reason" was featured on the Season Finale of The Unit. The album also features guest appearances by Adrian Young, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Paz Lechantin and Ana Lechantin.
The critical acclaim of both their live shows and their debut release underscores not only the bands onstage showmanship but the complexity and depth with which they compose music.
Rich in texture, melody and fervor the Oslo sound conveys a layered listening experience that is as intricate as it is intelligent and evocative. Oslo have the chops, tunes and aura to influence rather than be influenced. Its time for a liberating leap into originalitys embrace, says LA Weeklys Paul Rogers.
The Rise and Fall of Love and Hate will hit stores October 9, 2007.

Jody Raffoul's "Simple Life" available for download in August
Singer Songwriter JODY RAFFOUL's Acoustic Album, SIMPLE LIFE will finally be made available for download on August 14 on all major digital service providers. SIMPLE LIFE, is a collection of 'one-takes' recorded in a single session, that has become a classic album for the singer having sold over 20,000 CD's at live shows just in the Detroit/Windsor area. Originally recorded in 1999, long before the sandy voiced singer drew national attention stateside by being crowned the grand prize winner of the 2006 BON JOVI "Have A Nice Gig" contest - SIMPLE LIFE showcases the singer's amazing songwriting ability.
The creative direction of the album came about accidentally when JODY was scheduled to cut some vocals for another project at Ann Arbor's Big Sky studio. Whilst waiting around for the other musicians to show up, JODY began running through his live set of original songs while sound engineer Geoff Michael readied the studio. With tape rolling, JODY began tracking song after song on his beloved 1970 Martin Acoustic Guitar. An hour or so later and the addition of one song on keyboards, the 10 track SIMPLE LIFE album was born.
Although totally unplanned, SIMPLE LIFE is a raw acoustic gem with a sound that remains timeless and true to the singer's current musical direction. Each of the 10 songs reflect the life journey this working class grassroots singer has taken and many of them have become the staples of his successful live shows including; the title track, "Simple Life," "Smile," Don't Let Go," and "Fantastic L.A." Classic guitar rifts, a melancholic twist, hooks and chorus' that everyone can sing to - JODY is a narrative singer who sings from his heart and isn't afraid of reflecting on the life he's lived, in good and bad times.
About JODY RAFFOUL:
With over 4,500 live shows under his belt, this Ontario, Canada native has been a Detroit/Windsor critic's pick for over ten years, consistently growing his fan base across the United States since winning the 2006 nationwide BON JOVI "Have A Nice Gig" contest with his song, "Light of Day", (which was also featured in a SEARS National TV Commercial). The winner of the contest was chosen by the Bon Jovi themselves. The contest win gave a push that has allowed JODY to bring his signature throaty style to markets around the country and in his native Canada.
In addition to his headlining solo shows, JODY RAFFOUL has opened for big name artists such as COLLECTIVE SOUL, KID ROCK, NICKELBACK, JOE COCKER, BLUES TRAVELER, RICHARD MARX, COUNTING CROWS, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, UNCLE KRACKER, JOHN ENTWHISTLE, CHRIS ISAAK, PAUL RODGERS and most recently BON JOVI. Select tracks from JODY's album, LIKE A STAR, which was commercially released only in Canada, are also available for download. JODY is set to tour the West Coast in Fall '07.

Catch rockers June on tour
With the release date of their second album Make It Blur on Victory Records rapidly approaching on August 7, 2007, the members of Chicago indie-rock group JUNE simply can't sit still. Wrapping up a tour with Boys Night Out and Emanuel, June will see the release of their new album in Sweet Home Chicago before jumping back out on the road with The Graduate and The Higher on the 'Make Party Cool Tour'.
Kicking off on August 11th in Cleveland, the boys will do a hometown show at House of Blues Chicago on August 17th and then continue south through Colorado and finish up in Lancaster, CA on August 24th. (see dates below)
If that's not enough, they even managed to squeeze in filming a video for the album's first single "I'd Lose Myself". Directed by Major Lightner (Hawthorne Heights, Straylight Run, Asobi Seksu, Norah Jones), the video (release date TBA) will ensure June's ability to turn heads all over the country, beginning of course, with the release of this second album.
Make It Blur is a marked departure from the band's debut album, 2005's If You Speak Any Faster. With Marc McClusky (Hit the Lights, Powerspace) in the producer's chair, the band set out to create their opus, the album they'd be incredibly proud of. And Make It Blur is just that - an album they're incredibly proud of. From the orchestral oomph of the opening track "No Time For Sense" to the acoustic-led intricate guitar work of "Finally" to the harmonica-laden pop gem "I'd Lose Myself", Make It Blur is an album that bypasses transition and lands them in the winner's seat.
With each of the 12 tracks a standout, June has created a cohesive album that shows incredible growth and truly presents the band as seasoned musicians not afraid to show their really tight melodic edge while demonstrating their musical chops at the same time.
"We definitely drew from our influences much more on this record," says drummer Mark Sutor. "It has a lot more of a pop feel. Influences range from Maroon 5, Third Eye Blind, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake, etc. I think the fans are going to love the songs because I feel like we have matured a lot more in-between the last record and this one."
Make It Blur is the sound of a band on the verge of hugeness... With this album, their potential to break through in a big way isn't blurry... It's crystal clear.

TAB is on tour
TAB Announces Summer Tour
Boston’s Latest & Greatest Rock Trio / Tony, Adrian, Ben
Look Out For Debut LP
Debut Single “CYT or Secretary’s Day”: http://www.northstreetrecords.net/secretarysday.mp3
Boston Herald “With loads more talent than your average rock star progeny, the promising TAB should do fine without parental interference. Unlike dad's relatively clean brand of dirty rock 'n' roll, bassist/vocalist Adrian and guitarist Tony indulge in messy music mired in dark Deep Purple and Black Sabbath riffs and hip White Stripes and Stooges changes.”
July 28 - TT The Bear’s - Boston, MA
July 29 - The Khyber – Philadelphia, PA
July 30th – Piano’s – New York, NY
Aug 8 - Café du Nord, San Francisco, CA
Aug 9 The Echo - Los Angeles, CA
Aug 14 Troubadour- Los Angeles, CA
Aug 24 – Mercury Lounge - New York, NY
Aug 30 The Khyber – Philadelphia, PA
Aug 31 TT The Bear’s – Boston, MA
TAB formed in December, 2006 after Tony and Adrian decided they wanted to start a rap group featuring the characters Professor Bizniss and Tony Vegas, two fun loving lotharios who loved the ladies, money, and pimpin straight out of the south shore of Massachusetts. Luckily, Ben Tileston was there and, using the power of persuasion (and a lot of miller lite), got the band to stop rapping. What resulted was a ragged, hard rock band the likes of which has not been seen since 1974, but sounds like it could still be good in 2074. After their father, Joe Perry from Aerosmith, heard their first demos, he was impressed, but advised them not to write their own bio. They did not heed his advice.

Dwight Yoakam honors Buck Owens with new album
Multiple Grammy® Award winner and entertainer Dwight Yoakam is set to release Dwight Sings Buck, a one-of-a-kind new album honoring the legendary Buck Owens, out on October 23, 2007, as both a CD and a Limited Edition 180 gram vinyl record, from New West Records.
“After his death, it was the clearest way I could express my love for him and acknowledge the depth of our friendship” said Yoakam on why he chose to record an album of Buck Owens songs.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of the album will be donated by Dwight Yoakam and New West Records to the “Buck Owens American Music Foundation” a charity devoted to the preservation of the Bakersfield sound and the Buck Owens legacy. The emotional “Close Up The Honky Tonks,” will be released as the album’s first single.
Dwight and Buck’s profound initial musical connection turned into a life-long friendship. Yoakam demonstrates the enormous amount of love and respect he had for his friend with this special album honoring Owens’ legacy and showcasing his many hits. The Bakersfield sound was developed in Bakersfield and throughout California in the 1950s and 60s by the likes of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. Bakersfield country was an alternative to the Nashville country sound of the late 1950s. It was a sound that added electric instruments and other stylistic elements, borrowed from rock and roll.
Buck Owens was one of the first to bring this Bakersfield sound to mainstream audiences and his music also influenced later country stars. Yoakam pays tribute to this amazing artist and his music with Dwight Sings Buck , a fifteen track collection of many of Owens’ most memorable singles including 11 top five hits, eight of which reached #1 on the country charts; “Act Naturally,” “My Heart Skips A Beat,” “I Don’t Care (Just as Long as You Love Me),” “Only You (Can Break My Heart),” “Love’s Gonna Live Here,” “Your Tender Loving Care,” “Think of Me,” and “Together Again.”
Hailed as a “Renaissance Man” by Time Magazine, this Kentucky native, who was raised in Ohio, migrated to Los Angeles and blazed out of the LA club scene in 1986. Yoakam shared stages with LA roots-rock acts such as X, Lone Justice, the Blasters and Los Lobos. Beginning by revitalizing the Buck Owens/Bakersfield sound for a new generation, Yoakam would later push the envelope of the country music genre and transcend its parameters by experimenting with big band, American and British pop elements. Yoakam fashioned memorable hits ranging from “Ain’t That Lonely Yet,” “Fast As You,” “I Sang Dixie,” “Thousand Miles From Nowhere,” “Little Sister” and “Guitars, Cadillacs.”
With the success of the albums Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc. Etc, Hillbilly Deluxe and Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room, he was soon considered the hottest young country star in ages. In the ‘90s he reached a commercial apex with the multi-platinum-sellers If There Was A Way and This Time. To date Yoakam has 17 Top 10 country hits and has sold more than 23 million albums worldwide.
Since his 1993 film debut opposite Nicholas Cage in Red Rock West, he has worked steadily in movies and television with exceptional performances in Sling Blade, The Minus Man, Panic Room, and Crank. In 2000 he also directed, wrote and starred in a film of his own South of Heaven, West of Hell.
Dwight Sings Buck Track Listing:
My Heart Skips A Beat
Foolin’ Around
I Don’t Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)

Cryin’ Time
Above And Beyond

Watch for Dirty South Revolutionaries
The Dirty South Revolutionaries' hard-hitting punk antics will be taken on the road in August and September to promote the release of their new album, "Queen City Underground" on New York's Tent City Records.
DSR came together in 2004 from the filth and sultry heat of the city streets of Charlotte, NC. Each member had been in other high-profile local bands based out of the queen city, but none had found their real niche in the scene before the formation of Dirty South Revolutionaries.
From their do-it-yourself punk roots and metal/death influences to their hardcore virtues of integrity and brotherhood, the band presents an eclectic blend of music's most aggressive genres.
Prepare to have your ears assaulted by the sweet sound of "Queen City Underground."

Long Since Forgotten hits the road in support of upcoming effort
Syracuse, NY-based rock act LONG SINCE FORGOTTEN is gearing up for the release of their third record THE THEFT streeting Aug. 21 via Evolution Music Group.
Stranded in Boise, Idaho after severe van accident while on tour, the band found themselves staying at the home of the generous promoter who just so happened to have a home studio. During the ten days it took to get their van repaired, LONG SINCE FORGOTTEN spent the time crafting material that would soon become their next album THE THEFT.
Brothers Caleb and Josh Coy, along with fellow high school friend Jeff French, launched LONG SINCE FORGOTTEN seven years ago, adding drummer Steve Stockin to round up the lineup in 2001. "We were just kids that wanted to play music together," says Josh. "I was a fan of Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters. We just wanted to do a fun rock band."
That same year, the band headed to Kansas to record its first session with famed indie rock producer Ed Rose (The Get Up Kids, Limbeck). With the release of the band's debut album, All The Things You Said, LONG SINCE FORGOTTEN began landing larger shows and touring, including sharing bills with groups that have become national figures today and selling out their own local shows in the western New York region.
"We had been fortunate enough in the past to play with bands like Thursday, Coheed and Cambria, and Dashboard Confessional," says Josh. "I remember we played with Fall Out Boy on their very first tour. I think they actually opened for us!"
The band continued to tour and record, heading back with Rose to complete its second album, Standing Room Only, of which Coy says was cited as one of Rose's top ten favorite albums of his recording career. It was in support of this album that the accident occurred; inadvertently firing up the writing machine for what would become THE THEFT.
"I didn't really have to think too much about the songs, because I wasn't really confident in them," says Josh. "But once Steve came in, it was became clearer that we wanted to do this more often. The original goal was to get signed to a label and do a national tour. We had done that, so we're like, we'll just keep going."
"I put off being a teacher to do this band," he adds. "When we signed and put out our record in 2002, I stopped going to school with a semester left to get a bachelor's degree. It may not have been the wisest decision, but I wanted to give it a shot, you know?"

End o' week musings
As you may recall, I cut short last week because I was dancing at the Body Art Expo. Well, it was a blast! I met a lot of nice people, reunited with old friends and had an overall great time. In between sets and helping out with giveaways and contests, I managed to get in a tad of shopping and didn't go over my budget!
I hope you enjoy this photo of me in action from last Saturday at the Body Art Expo. The photo was taken by Richard, who specializes in Renaissance Fair and belly dance photography. You can see more of his work (and you should because he's good) at http://www.renaissancefaire.net/
On Monday I was worn out, but I knew better than to lay around like a big slug in front of the television all day- I didn't want my sore muscles to get stiff. So I put on some comfy shoes and headed out to Ontario Mills for a slow wander through the mall with some rest stops here and there. When I completed the large lap, the air conditioned theater was beckoning and I watched "Transformers." The film was a lot of fun, a bit intense and violent at times, but it was quite enjoyable and a great break from reality. I think what also made it interesting was that my brother, Jason, had quite a collection of toys. He would use Legos to create creatures like the Transformers characters and I think he might of even had a few of the real ones too. I just wish I could persuade him to go see the movie with me because I know he would love it.
The rest of my week has been quiet~ writing away at my job, editing and writing for http://www.dabelly.com/ and even doing some - don't faint - housework. I have band practice tomorrow and will be going to the Irwindale Raceway in the evening. Sunday I am hoping to make it down to the beach for the surfing competitions (I'll be watching, not hanging ten).
In rotation this week: Dio, Rob Zombie, Shakira, Tribe of Gypsies, Wicked Tinkers, Tim Curry, the Offspring, Joan Baez, Joe Walla Band, Gwar and Slayer.
This week I'm going to share with you the thought my deskmate, Linda, lives by:
"Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be" ~ Abraham Lincoln.
"And god knows what he went through," Linda says. "Two out of four of his boys died during his lifetime, not to mention the Civil War."
In other words, think happy, live happy ~ attitude is everything!
It also helps if you
keep on rockin'

Joe Walsh with JD & the Straight Shot kick off tour tonight
After opening for the Joe Walsh led James Gang tour last summer, JD & The Straight Shot will be the special guests for Walsh’s upcoming North American tour. Known for playing their own brand of down-and-dirty blues, JD & The Straight Shot will be performing new, unrecorded tracks, as well as the rockin’ jams and richly-smooth ballads from their debut album Nothing to Hide. The tour begins July 27th in Primm, NV and will wind up in St. Petersburg, FL on August 26th.
"We always look forward to sharing our music with a live audience and plan to have a great time on this tour with Joe Walsh. Last summer we worked with Joe and the James Gang -- truly an extraordinary experience -- and it’s an honor to be asked back,” commented vocalist/guitarist Jim Dolan.
JD & The Straight Shot includes Dolan; guitarist and chief songwriter Bruce Koplow; bassist Sue Williams; drummer David Longworth; and keyboardist Jonny Rosch.
The band’s last tour received critical praise from the Rocky Mountain News: “Surrounded with crack players, Dolan was putting convincing voice and emotion into the blues-based set.” The New York Post hailed JD & The Straight Shot debut CD, NOTHING TO HIDE as having “a bluesy, bar band feel and Dolan’s swaggering vocals are… reminiscent of Tom Waits and Randy Newman.”

P.O.V.’s “Following Sean” Rewinds to 1960s Haight-Ashbury, Fast-Forwards to the Present, Tuesday, July 31 on PBS
Summary: The P.O.V. series (a cinema term for “point of view”) celebrates its 20th year on PBS in 2007. P.O.V. is American television’s longest-running independent documentary series. P.O.V. is broadcast Tuesdays at 10 p.m. (check local listings), June through September on PBS, with primetime specials in the fall and winter.
Airdate: P.O.V.’s Following Sean by Ralph Arlyck airs Tuesday, July 31 at 10 p.m. on PBS. (Check local listings.)
Description: Thirty years after making a celebrated student short about a four-year-old child of free spirits living in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district at the height of the 1960s, Ralph Arlyck attempts the kind of revelation only documentary film can provide. In Following Sean, he goes in search of the impish, barefoot kid who delighted or horrified audiences, reflecting the hopes and fears of a turbulent, utopian era. In discovering what has become of Sean, Arlyck finds a complex reality — and experiences pure cinematic surprise. As the filmmaker comes to grips with his own midlife conflicts, Following Sean may reveal as much about Arlyck and his generation as it does his subject.
What had happened to the 4-year-old boy whom Arlyck had followed in 1969, two years after the “Summer of Love?” Back then, Arlyck’s candid camera and Sean Farrell’s precocious thoughts on pot smoking, police presence and a freewheeling, unshod life in San Francisco had sent the film “Sean” on an international round of screenings (including the White House) and press uproars rarely accorded a student film.
Viewers saw in “Sean” their best hopes or worst fears. Would Sean grow up to exemplify a “hippie” vision of freedom? Or would he turn out to be a drug addict or stockbroker?
Filmmaker’s Statement: “Most of us are constantly trying to figure out what we can claim for ourselves versus what we owe our families — the ones we live with, the ones that created us and the ones that will continue after us,” says Ralph Arlyck. “That was what was so wonderful about going back and finding Sean and the people around him, to see how an atypical American family — don’t forget we’re talking about hippies, commies and other ‘fringe elements’ — can still represent major currents of what was happening in America then, and still happens today.”
Biography: Ralph Arlyck, Director/Producer
Ralph Arlyck’s film work includes “Current Events,” which was selected Best Documentary at the Atlanta Film Festival and aired on PBS and the BBC; “An Acquired Taste,” regarded as a classic of the personal-essay genre; and the acclaimed “Godzilla Meets Mona Lisa,” a whimsical tour of Paris’ Pompidou Center. He has won awards at Sundance, the New York and London Film Festivals, the Prix Italia and other gatherings. Arlyck has been a prominent advocate for American independent producers, twice testifying before Congress and once before the Carnegie Commission on the importance of independent filmmakers to public television’s mission. He writes on production issues for several media journals. A former member of the Board of INPUT, the international television seminar, Arlyck is a member of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF), and a long-standing participant in the distribution cooperative New Day Films.
Arlyck received a bachelor’s degree in English from Colgate University and a master of science from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. He lives in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with his wife, Elisabeth, who teaches at Vassar College. He has taught film production at Vassar, the State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo and SUNY Purchase.

Lynyrd Skynyrd honored during In Demand concert tonight
In Demand's MOJO Network and World Productions present another installment of "Decades Rock Live," an innovative, critically acclaimed live concert series that features performances by celebrated artists from rock to soul who have influenced popular music over the last 50 years, as well as performances from some of today's hottest recording acts who have been inspired by these legends. The show features Skynyrd teamed up with old friends and new, including Hank Williams, Jr., the alternative rock band 3 Doors Down, and American Idol runner-up Bo Bice.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was saluted by the guests, but lead singer Johnny Van Zant told us that one of the highlights of the show for him was getting to play on everyone else's songs: "The cool thing about this whole Decades Rock (Live) show was, is that we actually did 'Kryptonite' with 3 Doors Down, so Skynyrd actually played that, and I sang some of the lyrics and stuff like that with Brad (Arnold), and Bocephus's 'Born To Boogie,' I believe it was, and also Bo Bice's new single 'The Real Thing.' So it was kind of cool - it wasn't just all for us, you know?"
"This show was filmed using Sony Digital HDW 900 Camera's and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound, for the ultimate audio/ video home theater experience", says Executive Producer, Barry Summers. "The song mixes are audiophile quality and music fans will truly enjoy the exceptional high resolution and sound on MOJO's HD Channel"

See "All My Loving" on August 1, closing night of Mods and Rockers Film Festival
US Premiere of 1968 UK Cult Classic ALL MY LOVING
Acclaimed British director Tony Palmer's early masterpiece documenting music and its effect on pop culture in the late '60s
Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood
Wednesday August 1, 2007 - 7:30pm
as part of closing night at the Mods and Rockers Film Festival
Q&A with Tony Palmer following the screening of All My Loving
"This is just great; absolutely what we meant." - Paul McCartney
As legend has it, in late '60s, Tony Palmer - filmmaker for the BBC and a close acquaintance of the Beatles - was challenged by John Lennon to make a film about the rise of new musicians. They convinced him that he had a unique opportunity to document and broadcast a burgeoning music scene to the general public. The result is All My Loving.
The Mods and Rockers Film Festival closes on Wednesday August 1 at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre with the American Premiere of All My Loving a celebrated 1968 film - never screened in the US - by celebrated British filmmaker Tony Palmer featuring exclusive footage he shot of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Cream, Donovan, Eric Burdon and Frank Zappa. The film was made at the personal behest of John Lennon and Paul McCartney who encouraged Palmer (then a 25-year-old protégé of Ken Russell) to document the emerging rock artists of 1967 and 1968. The film - which intercut some of the rock performances with footage of WW II and the Vietnam War - was considered incendiary and was never shown in the US.
There will be a Q&A with Tony Palmer immediately following the conclusion of All My Loving. He is flying in from the UK especially for the evening - which will also include two of his other rock films - the celebrated "Cream Farewell Concert" and "Ginger Baker In Africa."
"Working so closely with Hendrix, Cream, The Who & Frank Zappa, all of whom had been denied an airing on television until I came along, was a revelation - first for me, but more importantly for the mass television public for whom 'pop music' was just bubblegum and not to be taken seriously. Suddenly, the mass public was forced to rethink its prejudices, because here was a group of musicians whose musical skill was undeniable, and whose 'message' simply could not be ignored". - Tony Palmer
Tony Palmer is one of the leading directors of music documentaries and historical drama films in the world. His vast filmography of over one hundred films ranges from early works with The Beatles, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa (200 Motels), to the famous portraits with and about Walton, Britten, Stravinsky, Maria Callas, John Osborne, Margot Fonteyn and Menuhin. He has collected over 40 international prizes for his work including 12 Gold Medals at the New York Film & Television Festival, as well as numerous BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television) and EMMY nominations and awards. He is also the only person to have won television's most coveted award, the Prix Italia, twice. Palmer achieved notoriety with this his first major film, All My Loving.
"It was John Lennon's idea - the film. He said to me: 'you've got to do something to get these guys exposure on television. They're hammering at the door, except that the guys on the inside are deaf, and probably dumb & blind as well.' So I did, and All My Loving was the result. Even using the title was his suggestion. It caused a hell of a stir, but then I suspect he knew it would." - Tony Palmer
PRESS QUOTES:
"I have no doubt that wherever it is shown the film will win professional acclaim. Remarkable for its virtuosity, its impact is inescapable. No wonder it has been the subject of passionate argument in the corridors of the BBC for months."
- Stuart Hood, former Controller of Programmes, BBC TELEVISION
"With hideous, clamorous force, Tony Palmer's film about the pop world burst out of the TV screen last night - a disturbing piece of television...which no parent could afford to miss. It was certainly not a film which will die, a psychedelic experience which 10 years from now will be the definitive document of its time. How often does TV really make you sit on the edge of your chair?"
- James Thomas, DAILY EXPRESS
"...Magnificent - honest, accurate, unbiased and totally frank. As a comment on today, it was horrific and powerful, and as a protest it was stunning. 'All My Loving' showed us all the horror of war." - Vicki Wickham, DISC & MUSIC ECHO

BMI's next Acoustic Lounge August 6
BMI presents four intriguing songwriters at the Monday, August 6 edition of its Acoustic Lounge showcase series at Genghis Cohen: Frank Quintero, Jacob Groten, Micah Wolf and Bryon Friedman. The Acoustic Lounge takes place the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
During a career spanning three decades, Venezuelan composer and performer Frank Quintero has released 30 records, most of them gold- and platinum-certified. Born to a musical family, Frank began playing drums at the age of ten. He studied classical music in Caracas and percussion at Boston's Berklee College of Music, landing his first recording contract with PolyGram in 1976 at the age of 18.
Frank has created an impressive catalogue as a songwriter; artists such as Christian Castro, Gilberto Santarosa, Ricardo Montaner and Pandora have recorded over 150 of his songs. His composition "La Dama de la Ciudad" was included on keyboardist/composer/producer Don Grusin's 2005 Grammy-nominated live CD The Hang.
Jacob Groten started playing the piano at the age of five. By ten he was writing original music, and at the ripe age of 17, Warner Chappell offered him a publishing deal. Having just turned 19, Jacob is working on his debut album with Grammy Award-winning producers Sebastian Krys and Dan Warner.
Jacob has performed on albums for Latin Grammy Award-winner and six-time Grammy nominee Obie Bermudez, has recorded with Universal Music artist Jeremias, and has been invited to write with TVT recording artist Ina. He is also an accomplished actor who helped write, produce, and act in original plays and musicals at the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts in Florida.
Born in Bainbridge Island, WA, Micah Wolf has led a nomadic lifestyle. His mother's adventurous spirit found them living in numerous locations throughout North America, a coastal town in Mexico, and with a traditional Cree Indian family in Canada. They eventually became permanent fixtures in Hawaii. It was these unique experiences that helped shape Micah's creativity and outlook on life, which he then poured into his music. Micah recorded his self-titled debut album, Micah Wolf, in 2006.
In the spirit of DIY, Micah, with the help of some friends, constructed his own studio to record and produce the music. Friends also handcrafted the guitars and stand-up bass that are featured on the album. Micah then started his own record label, Blockplane Records, to distribute the album.
Professional skier Bryon Friedman has taken some of the most beautiful yet challenging mountains in the world — while carrying his guitar the entire way. After suffering a leg injury in the 2005 World Cup downhill in Chamonix, France, Byron took a hiatus from the competitive sport to focus more on his creative side through music. The result is his debut CD, Road Sodas, which he recorded in his hometown, Park City, Utah.
"Recording this album has been a goal of mine for years but I never found the time because skiing was always my first priority," recounts Bryon. "Since the injury, music has taken precedence — but I hope to be back on the World Cup soon!"
The Acoustic Lounge is one of many opportunities BMI offers artists to showcase their talent in front of their peers and a supportive audience. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, offering a great opportunity to network with other aspiring and working singer/songwriters. For established writers, it provides a chance to monitor new musical trends and be involved in the grass-roots/DIY musical movement.

The Ditty Bops announce "Farm Tour" dates
The Ditty Bops have announced the line-up of 2007 “Farm Tour” summer concert dates. The band will trek coast-to-coast through farming communities of America in support of a cause close to their heart: organic farming and renewing interest in locally grown food. By targeting visits to Co-ops, restaurants, health food stores, organic dairy suppliers and vegetable growers, The Ditty Bops hope to bring attention to the struggles and achievements of family farms in the US. Portions of the proceeds raised from the tour will go to benefit local farm organizations, “The Growing Connection” and the non-profit organization FARM AID, founded by Willy Nelson, Neil Young, Dave Matthews and John Mellencamp.
Both Amanda and Abby worked at farmer’s markets before getting into music, and Abby worked for a biodynamic farm at the Green Market of New York. “As touring musicians we’re trying to incorporate elements of our lives back home into our life on the road,” says Abby. “Eating locally grown organic food is not only good for the environment, small farmers, and the local economy, but it also tastes better.”
Previously, The Ditty Bops toured by bicycle over 4,700 miles from Los Angeles to New York City. They performed 40 concerts along the way in an effort to promote clean air, cycling, and their new album Moon Over the Freeway. In the process they raised both awareness and funds for two bicycle non-profits “Adventure Cycling” and “Pedals for Progress.”
The Ditty Bops formed in 2003 and began to play around Los Angeles as a four-piece acoustic band with Amanda on mandolin, dulcimer, and washboard and Abby on guitar and piano. The retro-flavored style of their music, which incorporates elements of Western swing, ragtime, gypsy-jazz, pop, and vaudeville-era musical theater, was beautifully captured on the duo's 2004 self-titled debut album for Warner Bros. Records as well as their latest record, Moon Over The Freeway, both produced by Mitchell Froom (Suzanne Vega, Crowded House, Elvis Costello). Self described, the band “is like Calamity Jane, Betty Boop, and Jessica Rabbit laughing in their rag top convertible as they drive through the mysterious streets of San Berdoo."

Dead Rock West to perform in LA August and September
After months of packed houses and enthusiastic reviews, Dead Rock West will wrap up their U.S. tour in their newly-adopted home of Los Angeles with performances at Safari Sam’s on Saturday, August 25th with John Doe, and then at the Summer Strummer Music Festival in Santa Monica on Sunday, Sept. 2nd.
Seamlessly merging together sounds of rock with garage, power-pop jangle and country influences, DRW transcend being labeled as one genre and instead, create a kaleidoscope of sounds as bold and daring as they are soft and warm. The band will be performing songs from their forthcoming album, Honey and Salt due for release in August 2007 by Populuxe Records.
Critics are raving about the new album. “Honey and Salt is a seamless mix of rock and country where perfectly pitched harmonies tug at your heart strings, grainy guitar solos serenade your soul, and blends of pop get your toe tapping. Their sound is eclectic, like a high powered X and Wilco all blended into one.” - Red Tram International
“Dead Rock West have packed a career’s worth of potential hit songs onto a single disc. Honey and Salt spans the history of rock, from Elvis to post-grunge.” -Tom Semioli, Amplifier
Although this is DRW’s debut album, it seems as if the band has been together for decades due, in part, to their impressive credentials. Founded by vocalist Cindy Wasserman and singer/guitarist Frank Lee Drennen, Dead Rock West is also made up of electric and double bassist David J. Carpenter, drummer Bryan Head and mandolin, octave mandolin, Hammond organ and Vox Continentalist Phil Parlapiano. This amazing array of talented musicians have previously toured and recorded with Grant Lee Buffalo, Rod Stewart, John Prine, Abandoned Pools and Social Distortion, among others. Now on a national tour with John Doe (acting as opener and backing band), DRW is gathering new fans in droves, due to their incredibly catchy tunes and volcanic stage show.
Songs from Honey and Salt have been rotated heavily on XM Satellite Radio, featured on ABC’s hit series “Men in Trees” and have been “hot picks” in LA Times.
“Mixed by the well-traveled Richard Dodd, Honey and Salt oozes the well-crafted country rock feel of some his former employers: early Wilco, Tom Petty and The Traveling Wilburys.” -The San Diego Union Tribune
“...the tracks have that big, wide-screen muscle you want in a crowded, sweaty bar or on the radio during a long road trip.” - Houston Press

Telephone and Suffrajett on tour
TELEPHONE, Portland’s own synth-pop outfit, forged by former Dandy Warhol founder Eric Hedford, gets set to hit the road. TELEPHONE launched their first full-length album AUTOMATIC released June 19 via Los Angeles and Chicago-based independent record label Cobra Music (distributed by Fontana Distribution).
“I can’t wait to get out and tour this record. We spent a year making it, and went through a lot: band members quit, we fired people, we had fun, drama, lots of stress, and questioned whether the band would go on. But, after all of it, we made a record I am proud of,” remarks Hedford.
Radio seems to agree. The first week at radio, TELEPHONE received support from some of the country’s most influential stations including Los Angeles’ KROQ, spinning “Mystery Girl.” WKQX in Chicago, KTCL in Denver and WOCL in Orlando are receiving extremely positive feedback from listeners hearing “Shout About It.”
The album sequence and lyrics ended up reflecting the struggle of making the record, starting off positive, then diving down into despair, and then ending with a sense of hope for the future. “I swear it’s not a cheesy ‘concept’ album,” Hedford laughs.
"It's a Northwest effort, through and through," says Hedford, recording basic tracks with Jeff Stuart Saltzman (Death Cab for Cutie, Stephen Malkmus), mixing with Hedford’s old friend Tony Lash (The Dandy Warhols, Special Goodness, Heatmiser, Elliott Smith), and receiving a helping hand from friends.

SUFFRAJETT is set to release Black Glitter, their most recent critically acclaimed record, in Japan on Star Mole Records Sept. 25. Black Glitter is the embodiment of the SUFFRAJETT way of life–dark, sharp and shiny. It fearlessly proclaims that this is the year Simi crushes the glut of boring bands into a fine powder. SUFFRAJETT, Chicago’s unstoppable force of nature, joins Star Mole label mates Veruca Salt, Rye Coalition and Prototypes.
SUFFRAJETT’s innovative gang of delinquents—Simi (vocals), Jason Chasko (guitar), Kevin Roberts (bass), and Danny Severson (drums)—continue to tour tirelessly in support of Black Glitter out now in the U.S. on indie upstart label Cobra Music/Fontana.
“Grads of the Joan Jett/ Mötley Crüe School of Rock, the Chicago band's sophomore effort is the raw, hair metal-heavy soundtrack for a drunken fight in a pool hall. Watch your back.”
– Blender, February 2007
Created from a divergent brew of The Runaways, Tamar-Kali, Blondie, Diana Ross, Grace Jones and Guns ‘n’ Roses, SUFFRAJETT emerged just three years ago as one of the driving forces in independent rock with their self-titled debut, released on In Music We Trust. Esquire described the offering, recorded in a Manhattan mini-storage space, as a “dirty record about sex and drugs” and dubbed it one of the 21 essential records of 21st century.
Originally formed by Simi, guitarist Chasko (who co-wrote Liz Phair’s whitechocolatespaceegg) and bassist Roberts in New York, SUFFRAJETT unearthed drummer Severson once the band made to move to Chicago. The band has previously spent their share of time on the road with MC5, The Eagles of Death Metal, Electric Six, Local H and The River Boat Gamblers.

Evans Blue is back on the road
Evans Blue is back out on the road and on the radio charts supporting their new release THE PURSUIT BEGINS WHEN THIS portrayal OF LIFE ENDS on The Pocket/Hollywood Records. The band was recently met by 600 fans when they appeared at the Machine Shop in Flint, MI to begin their tour, with a line of Evans Blue devotees snaking around the block to get tickets for the sold-out show. While the band expected full crowds, this kind of overwhelming outpouring of support for their new material has pleasantly surprised the band at every stop of their summer run so far. The remainder of the summer will see Evans Blue crossing the U.S. on a headlining national tour, featuring support act Framing Hanley (Silent Majority/ILG).
THE PURSUIT… features the band’s signature brand of heavy yet melodic rock and is led by the anthemic first single/title track “The Pursuit.” That single, a pummeling track that is already making noise at rock radio, quickly climbed to #18 last week on the Active Rock chart and is rapidly rising on the Alternative chart. The popular tune has been added to over 110 stations, including SIRIUS Octane, XM Squizz, The Edge (KDGE) Dallas, Q101 (WKQX) Chicago, The Buzz (KTBZ) Houston, WIIL Chicago, WJRR Orlando, KFNK Seattle, KUPD Phoenix, The Point (KPNT) St. Louis, WRZX Indianapolis, WNFZ Knoxville, WKRL Syracuse and many more.
More than just a collection of songs, THE PURSUIT… is a concept album with multiple storylines that will continue to find new life in the band’s upcoming videos and multimedia online features. The new album expands upon the unique vision the Toronto-bred band displayed on their 2006 debut, The Melody and the Energetic Nature of Volume, which sold nearly 200,000 copies and generated the hit singles “Cold (But I’m Still Here)” and “Beg.”
Led by enigmatic frontman/lyricist Matisyn, the band is excited to take the stage with aggressive live versions of the tracks on the dense, sprawling album THE PURSUIT…. Songs such as “Pin Up” and the haunting “Kiss the Flag” wind through new twists and turns, both lyrically and musically, while “Q” is defined by Matisyn as “one of the best songs we’ve written as a whole.”
The first video for the new album has been shot and will be delivered to outlets in August, while “The Pursuit” continues to burn up airwaves and iPods across the land. With swarms of rabid fans catching the live Evans Blue experience at sold-out shows everywhere throughout the rest of the summer, and anticipation building daily for the new album’s release next week, THE PURSUIT… is set to take Evans Blue to the next levels of exposure in mainstream rock.

Silverchair's new album is here
SILVERCHAIR's critically acclaimed new record YOUNG MODERN comes out today by way of their own label, eleven music in association w/Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group. The band is currently on tour w/We Are The Fury including stops in DC, NJ and NYC this week and Detroit, Chicago for Lollapalooza and Minneapolis the following week. Their Lollapalooza set time is 2:30-3:30pm Sat August 4th on the At&t Main Stage in between Tokyo Police Club and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
"Straight Lines" is currently the hottest track at alternative radio as we were up to #29 on BDS in the singles' third week on the chart and was the #3 spin gainer for the second week in a row as we went up over 100 spins last week. We're receiving airplay on 5 different formats; Alt, Triple A, Hot Ac, Active and Mainstream Rock. BTW, this is their biggest song EVER in Australia, even bigger than '95's "Tomorrow" and considering the fact that Silverchair own more #1 records than any other band in Aussie music history, that's a telling stat!
VH1 has added the video for "Straight Lines" into LARGE rotation. Tune into MTV tomorrow night (Weds 7/25 - Times TBD) for an MTV News piece on Silverchair as John Norris sits down with Daniel Johns to discuss the new record. Also, look for Silverchair on FUSE tomorrow afternoon (Weds 7/25) as they'll be live on "The Sauce" at 6pm EST.
"Modern is a polished glam-rock suite, boasting more ecstatic melodies and colorful riffs than their four previous efforts combined. Frontman Daniel Johns' voice... soars from campy snarl to sensitive falsetto in mere moments. Here's hoping Silverchair's second act is just getting started." Grade: A- (EW PICK) Entertainment Weekly
"Young Modern has reestablished Daniel Johns and crew as a commercial force, exhibiting a lush, mature sound that has done nothing to diminish their fans' loyalty." LA Times
"Oh my how the boys from Silverchair have grown...Silverchair have again taken a huge leap in artistry and sophistication with their fifth longplayer, Young Modern...With soft piano that builds into a baroque pop delight, the soaring and contagious lead single, 'Straight Lines' affirms just how far Silverchair have come over the last decade." Associated Press
"{On Young Modern} Johns now sings higher and softer; his voice (and Bono-like penchant for short hair and vests) renders him a more delicate, mature post-rock star." OC Weekly
"Dig in - this thing is quite a feast." Boston Phoenix
